The skin barrier, also called the stratum corneum, is made up of corneocytes (the outer layer of skin cells) embedded in a lipid matrix. This “brick-and-mortar” structure acts as a shield against environmental stressors like pollution, cold air, and microbes, while also preventing water loss.
When the barrier is compromised, moisture escapes more easily, leaving the skin dehydrated, dull, and sensitive. Common causes of a weakened barrier include:
Seasonal weather changes
Over-exfoliation or harsh scrubs
Using potent actives without support (e.g., retinoids, acids)
Skipping moisturiser or SPF
Environmental stressors like pollution or UV exposure
Recognising early signs of barrier disruption — tightness, redness, flakiness, or occasional breakouts — allows you to adjust your routine proactively.
