Choosing between these usually comes down to which acid family your skin gets on with. Our guide to how AHAs and BHAs differ sets the two side by side, and the glycolic acid glossary entry covers typical strengths, how often to use it and how to build up tolerance.

Frequently asked questions
Which SkinCeuticals toner should I start with?
Which SkinCeuticals toner should I start with?
Pick by goal: Equalizing Toner to rebalance skin's pH and sweep away cleanser residue without exfoliating, or Blemish + Age Solution for an exfoliating acid toner aimed at oily, blemish-prone skin. Retexturing Activator is the third route, an alcohol-free exfoliating serum for a refined, glowing finish. Start with Equalizing Toner if your skin is new to toners.
How do I use these — before or after serum?
How do I use these — before or after serum?
Toners go straight after cleansing, before your serums. Sweep Equalizing Toner over the skin with a cotton pad, or apply Blemish + Age Solution the same way in the evening and let it dry for a minute before your next step. Retexturing Activator is pressed in with fingertips like a serum rather than swept on.
What is the difference between Blemish + Age Solution and Retexturing Activator?
What is the difference between Blemish + Age Solution and Retexturing Activator?
Blemish + Age Solution uses glycolic, salicylic and dioic acids to clear the look of congestion and refine oily, breakout-prone skin. Retexturing Activator relies on a gentler hydroxyethyl urea and glycolic blend that resurfaces while holding onto moisture, so it suits drier or sensitive skin. Use one or the other as your exfoliating step, not both.
Can I use an exfoliating toner every day?
Can I use an exfoliating toner every day?
Start Blemish + Age Solution or Retexturing Activator three evenings a week and build up as your skin adjusts, rather than jumping to nightly. Equalizing Toner has no acids, so it is fine morning and night. Always apply SPF the next day, since acid exfoliation leaves skin more exposed to daylight.
Can I use these toners with my vitamin C serum?
Can I use these toners with my vitamin C serum?
Yes. Sweep Equalizing Toner after cleansing to prep, then apply an antioxidant serum like the brand's hero C E Ferulic onto the balanced skin. Keep exfoliating toners such as Blemish + Age Solution to the evening and your vitamin C to the morning, so acids and antioxidants aren't competing. That split gets the best from both.
