Heliocare 360° vs La Roche-Posay Anthelios: Fernblock vs Cell-Ox Shield Compared

Updated Aug 20, 2026

The Verdict

Heliocare 360° and La Roche-Posay Anthelios take genuinely different routes to SPF — Fernblock® antioxidant technology versus Cell-Ox Shield® — but we can only speak in depth for the range we stock. Anthelios isn't currently listed at Skintique, so if oily skin, sensitivity, pigmentation or a tinted finish is what's driving your search, the Heliocare 360° range has a dedicated formula for each of those starting points, reviewed in full on this site.

Heliocare 360° and La Roche-Posay Anthelios are two of the most searched-for SPF names in UK skincare, but they start from different technology philosophies — Heliocare's own Fernblock® antioxidant complex versus La Roche-Posay's Cell-Ox Shield® system — and only one range is currently stocked at Skintique. Here's how the two approaches differ, and where each is actually available to buy.

Two different antioxidant philosophies

Both brands build their sunscreens around a named antioxidant technology rather than selling filters alone, which is part of why the two ranges are so often searched together. Heliocare's Fernblock® runs across every product in the 360° range regardless of texture or finish, and is derived from an extract of the fern Polypodium leucotomos — you can read more in our Fernblock glossary entry. La Roche-Posay takes a different route with Cell-Ox Shield®, its own branded combination of UVA/UVB filters and antioxidants used across the Anthelios range.

We're deliberately not comparing the two technologies head-to-head on effectiveness. Both names are the brand's own positioning rather than a third-party clinical comparison we've verified against independent, cited data, and we haven't pulled Anthelios's own product documentation to confirm exact filter compositions, SPF ratings or claims for individual SKUs in that range. If you want the detail on Fernblock specifically, our Heliocare 360 guide covers what's confirmed against this store's own product data, SKU by SKU.

Why we only stock one of these ranges

Skintique carries the full Heliocare 360° range because it's part of our core clinic and skincare offering. La Roche-Posay Anthelios isn't currently listed on this store — it's a mass-market pharmacy brand widely available through Boots, Superdrug and most UK pharmacies, rather than a range we stock ourselves. That's a stocking decision, not a statement about which brand performs better. If Anthelios is what you're already using and it's working for your skin, this page isn't a reason to switch.

What we can offer instead is a genuine alternative from a range we do stock and review in depth. If your reason for looking at Anthelios is a specific need — oily or acne-prone skin, sensitivity, pigmentation, or a tinted finish — Heliocare 360° has a dedicated formula built around most of those same starting points; see our Gel Oil-Free review for oily and acne-prone skin, or our Mineral Tolerance Fluid review for sensitive skin.

If you're deciding between the two

  • If you want a fragrance-conscious, sensitive-skin-specific formula with a wide choice of finishes, and you're happy to buy from a specialist skincare retailer, Heliocare 360° is the range we can speak to directly — it's what we stock and review in full.
  • If you're already using and getting on with an Anthelios product from your pharmacy, treat this page as background on the technology difference, not a reason to switch — we're not making a performance claim either way.
  • If you're pigmentation-focused, acne-prone, or looking for a specific finish such as tinted, mineral or spray, start with our Heliocare 360 guide to find the SKU built for that concern.

FAQs

What's the difference between Heliocare 360 and La Roche-Posay Anthelios?

They're built on different named antioxidant technologies — Heliocare uses Fernblock®, derived from Polypodium leucotomos fern extract, while La Roche-Posay uses Cell-Ox Shield® across its Anthelios range. Only Heliocare 360 is currently stocked at Skintique.

Is La Roche-Posay Anthelios sold at Skintique?

No — Anthelios isn't currently listed on this store. It's a mass-market brand widely available through UK pharmacies and high-street retailers. We stock and review the Heliocare 360 range in depth instead.

Is Fernblock better than Cell-Ox Shield?

We don't make that claim either way. Both are the brand's own named antioxidant technology rather than something we've verified head-to-head against independent, cited data, so this page compares philosophy and availability, not performance.

Which Heliocare product is closest to my usual Anthelios formula?

It depends what you use Anthelios for. For oily or acne-prone skin, see our Gel Oil-Free review; for sensitive skin, see Mineral Tolerance Fluid. Our Heliocare 360 guide routes you to the closest match by concern.

Can I use either brand if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, please contact our team for advice before use.
