If you wear sunscreen properly, will you still come back from a sunny day with a tan? The honest answer is usually yes, at least a little. Sunscreen reduces how much ultraviolet (UV) light reaches your skin, but no product blocks it entirely. Here is what a tan actually is, why it still happens through SPF, and how to enjoy the sun more sensibly.
What is a tan, actually?
A tan is your skin's response to UV exposure. When UV light reaches the deeper layers of the skin, specialised cells called melanocytes produce more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. That extra melanin darkens the skin. Dermatology bodies such as the British Association of Dermatologists describe a tan as a visible sign that skin has been exposed to UV, rather than a sign of "good health".
An immediate, short-lived darkening can appear within hours as existing melanin reacts to UVA, while the slower tan that develops over days comes from newly produced melanin triggered mainly by UVB. Both are driven by UV reaching the skin — exactly what sunscreen is formulated to reduce.
Why can you still tan with sunscreen on?
Sunscreen lowers the dose of UV your skin receives, but several practical factors mean some still gets through:
- No SPF blocks 100% of UV. SPF 30 filters roughly 97% of UVB and SPF 50 around 98% — a meaningful difference, but neither is a total barrier, so a little UV always gets through.
- Most people under-apply. The protection quoted on the bottle is measured with a generous, even layer. In real life most of us apply far less, so actual protection is lower than the number suggests.
- Reapplication gaps. Sunscreen wears off through sweat, water and rub-off. Miss the two-hourly top-up and UV exposure climbs through the day.
- Missed patches. Hairlines, ears, the tops of feet and the back of the neck are easy to skip, and those areas tan (and burn) readily.
So a light tan while wearing sunscreen is normal — it reflects the UV that got past an imperfect, real-world layer of protection, not a failure of the product.
Can you tan with SPF 50?
Yes, you can still tan with SPF 50. It filters a very high proportion of UVB, but because it is not a complete block, some UV reaches the skin and can trigger melanin — especially during long spells outdoors, in strong midday sun, or when you are not reapplying. A broad-spectrum SPF 50 is one of the best everyday choices for guarding against sunburn and premature ageing, yet it slows and lessens tanning rather than switching it off entirely.
Does a higher SPF stop tanning completely?
No. Higher SPF numbers offer incremental gains in UVB filtering, but the curve flattens quickly: the jump from SPF 30 to SPF 50 is modest, and no sunscreen removes all UV. Two things matter more than chasing an ever-higher number:
- Broad-spectrum cover. SPF only rates UVB. For UVA — the wavelengths most associated with tanning and skin ageing — look for the UVA-in-a-circle logo or a high star rating, which signals balanced broad-spectrum sun protection.
- How you use it. Enough product, even coverage and regular reapplication make a bigger difference than the headline SPF figure.
If avoiding a tan altogether is your goal, sunscreen alone will not guarantee it — shade, clothing and timing do more of that work.

- Add physical barriers. A hat, sunglasses and light long sleeves reduce UV far more reliably than sunscreen alone.
- Fake the glow. Self-tan and gradual tanning lotions give colour with no UV exposure at all.
