What Is Acer Mono Sap?
Acer mono sap is a natural extract derived from the sap of the Korean maple tree (Acer mono). In skincare formulations, it functions as a humectant—a type of ingredient that attracts and binds water molecules to the skin's surface and upper layers.
The sap contains naturally occurring sugars and minerals that give it hydrating and skin-conditioning properties. It is used in concentrations typically below 5% in moisturisers, serums and hydrating treatments.
How It Works
Acer mono sap works as a humectant through its sugar and mineral content. These molecules are hygroscopic, meaning they have an affinity for water and can absorb it from the environment and deeper skin layers, then hold it within the stratum corneum (the skin's outer barrier).
This mechanism helps to increase skin hydration and create a plumper, more dewy appearance. The conditioning effect may also come from trace minerals and amino acids naturally present in the sap.
Clinical Evidence & References
Formal clinical studies specifically evaluating Acer mono sap in skincare are limited. However, as a plant-derived humectant, it behaves similarly to other sugar-based hydrating ingredients that have demonstrated efficacy in increasing skin moisture levels.
The ingredient is generally recognised as safe for topical use in cosmetics, though robust published data on long-term efficacy and tolerability remain sparse. Any claims about skin benefits should be considered preliminary until further research is available.
How to Use
Apply Acer mono sap-containing products to damp skin to maximise its hydrating effect—the moisture on your skin gives the humectant more water to bind. It works well in serums, essences and lightweight moisturisers, and can be layered under heavier creams or oils to seal in hydration.
