Acer Mono Sap

Acer mono sap is a natural extract derived from the sap of the Korean maple tree (Acer mono). In skincare formulations, it functions as a humectant—a type of ingredient that attracts and binds water molecules to the skin's surface and upper layers.The sap contains naturally occurring sugars and minerals that give it hydrating and skin-conditioning properties. It is used in concentrations typically below 5% in moisturisers, serums and hydrating treatments.

Acer mono sap works as a humectant through its sugar and mineral content. These molecules are hygroscopic, meaning they have an affinity for water and can absorb it from the environment and deeper skin layers, then hold it within the stratum corneum (the skin's outer barrier).This mechanism helps to increase skin hydration and create a plumper, more dewy appearance. The conditioning effect may also come from trace minerals and amino acids naturally present in the sap.

Apply Acer mono sap-containing products to damp skin to maximise its hydrating effect—the moisture on your skin gives the humectant more water to bind. It works well in serums, essences and lightweight moisturisers, and can be layered under heavier creams or oils to seal in hydration.

Acer mono sap is generally well-tolerated and suitable for most skin types. As with any plant extract, those with known sensitivities to maple tree pollen or related botanicals should patch test first.
