Acetylated Glycol Stearate

Acetylated glycol stearate is a synthetic ester derived from glycerin and stearic acid. It functions as an emollient and emulsion stabiliser in skincare formulations, helping to keep oil and water-based ingredients blended and preventing separation over time.In products, it works to soften and smooth the skin surface by forming a light, breathable layer. It is used sparingly in formulations—typically in very low concentrations—and is found in roughly one in a thousand skincare products.

Acetylated glycol stearate works by mimicking some of the natural oils found in skin, creating a protective but lightweight film on the surface. This reduces transepidermal water loss—the evaporation of moisture from the skin—while remaining permeable enough to allow the skin to breathe.Its emulsion-stabilising properties allow manufacturers to combine ingredients that would otherwise separate, resulting in a uniform texture and consistent delivery of active ingredients.

This ingredient is typically incorporated into products by manufacturers rather than used directly by consumers. If you use a moisturiser or cream containing acetylated glycol stearate, apply it to clean skin once or twice daily. It pairs well with humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which draw moisture into the skin while this ingredient helps lock it in.

Generally well-tolerated by most skin types. Those with acne-prone or very sensitive skin should monitor their skin's response, as some synthetic esters may potentially comedogenic in susceptible individuals.
