This polymer works by forming a film-like network within an emulsion. The stearyl methacrylate component has an affinity for oils, whilst the acrylate backbone interacts with the aqueous phase. Together, they anchor themselves at the interface between oil and water droplets, preventing them from coalescing and separating.The polymer also increases the viscosity of the formulation, thickening the product to the desired consistency. This both improves the sensory experience and helps stabilise the emulsion mechanically.

No special application technique is required. Use products containing this ingredient as directed on the label. It is a background ingredient and does not require any particular timing or complementary actives to function effectively.

Generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations. Very rarely, some individuals may experience sensitivity to synthetic polymers, though reactions are uncommon at the concentrations used in skincare.
