Benzyl Glycol

Benzyl glycol is a synthetic humectant and solvent derived from benzyl alcohol and glycerol. In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a solvent—helping to dissolve and stabilise other ingredients that might otherwise be poorly miscible in a formula. This makes it particularly useful in products combining oils, water-soluble actives, and other components that don't naturally blend well.As a humectant, benzyl glycol also has a modest capacity to draw water into the skin, contributing to hydration in formulations where it appears at meaningful concentrations.

Benzyl glycol works as a solvent by bridging hydrophobic (oil-loving) and hydrophilic (water-loving) components. Its chemical structure allows it to dissolve compounds that would not typically mix in water or oil alone, creating a more uniform, stable product.Its humectant properties function by hygroscopically attracting water molecules from deeper skin layers and the environment to the outer skin surface, helping to maintain hydration in the stratum corneum.

Benzyl glycol is typically a background ingredient rather than an active, so there are no specific application instructions. Use products containing it as directed by the manufacturer. If you are formulating with it, typical concentrations range up to around 5%, though most cosmetic products use lower amounts for solvent function.

Benzyl glycol is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations. However, as with all glycol-based ingredients, those with known sensitivity to glycols or a history of contact dermatitis should patch-test first.
