What Is Boswellia Serrata Extract?

Boswellia serrata extract is made from the gum resin of the Boswellia serrata tree, a hardy deciduous species that grows in the dry hill forests of India and neighbouring parts of South Asia. You will more often see it called Indian frankincense; in Ayurvedic tradition it is known as salai guggul. The resin is harvested by scoring the bark and letting the milky exudate harden into pale, aromatic tears, which are then extracted to produce the cosmetic ingredient.

The raw resin is roughly 30-60% resin fraction, 5-10% volatile essential oil and the remainder water-soluble gum polysaccharides. It is the resin fraction that formulators are usually after, because it carries a family of pentacyclic triterpene molecules called boswellic acids. The most studied of these is AKBA, or 3-O-acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid.

On a label it appears simply as Boswellia Serrata Extract, sometimes alongside Boswellia Serrata Gum or Boswellia Serrata Resin Extract. One thing worth knowing: the INCI name alone does not tell you which fraction you have been given. Some versions are standardised, near-odourless boswellic acid concentrates; others sit much closer to a fragrant frankincense oil chosen partly for its scent.

In modern skincare it turns up in soothing balms and creams aimed at reactive or visibly ageing skin, and in aromatic frankincense facial oils.

How It Works

Boswellic acids are lipophilic — fat-loving — so they are formulated into an oil phase or an emulsion rather than a watery gel, which is also how they are best held against the skin surface.

The best-characterised action is enzyme inhibition. In laboratory work, AKBA attaches to 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), the enzyme that converts arachidonic acid into leukotrienes — the signalling molecules behind the flushed, blotchy look of irritated skin. Unusually, boswellic acids bind at a site separate from where arachidonic acid docks, which is why the ingredient is often described as behaving differently to more familiar botanical soothers. The intended cosmetic outcome is simply skin that looks calmer and more even in tone.

Laboratory studies also report that boswellic acids slow human leukocyte elastase, an enzyme released by immune cells that can break down elastin, and stimulate fibroblasts in culture. Those two laboratory effects are the proposed explanation for the improvements in tactile roughness, fine lines and measured elasticity recorded in a small split-face human trial of a 0.5% boswellic acid cream (15 volunteers, reported twice by the same Italian group).

Most of this remains test-tube evidence, and the human work comes from one small research group. Treat the mechanism as plausible rather than settled.

How to Use

Boswellia serrata extract is a supporting player rather than a headline active. It performs best folded into a well-built routine.

  • Favour oil-based or emulsion formats. Boswellic acids are fat-soluble, so creams, balms and oil-phase serums carry them far better than clear water gels.
  • Check where it sits on the ingredients list. Many products include it near the bottom at token levels. The published human research used a cream standardised to 0.5% boswellic acids, which is a useful benchmark.
  • Apply to clean, dry skin, then follow with your usual moisturiser if the product itself is lightweight.
  • Once or twice daily is plenty. The published trial used once-daily application for 30 days, so give it at least a month before you judge it.
  • It layers easily. There are no known pH constraints, so it sits comfortably with niacinamide, panthenol, ceramides and peptides. Applying a boswellia-containing cream after retinoids or exfoliating acids can help skin feel more comfortable.
  • Store away from heat and daylight. Resin extracts and their essential oil fraction oxidise over time.

Safety & Precautions

Tolerance appears good. In the published split-face trial no adverse effects were reported — though the human safety dataset in cosmetics is small.

The main caution is what travels alongside the boswellic acids. Frankincense-type resin extracts often carry a volatile essential oil fraction containing terpenes such as limonene and alpha-pinene, which can oxidise on air exposure and become sensitising. If your skin is reactive, or you already react to fragrance and botanical oils, patch test on the inner forearm for several days first.

Avoid it entirely if you have a known allergy to frankincense or other Burseraceae resins. Keep it away from broken skin and the eye area. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, evidence on topical boswellia is limited, so check with your midwife, GP or pharmacist first. Anyone managing a diagnosed skin condition should speak to a doctor.
