What Is Butane?
Butane is a colourless, odourless hydrocarbon gas commonly used in cosmetic formulations as a propellant. In skincare products, it serves to pressurise aerosol containers and deliver the product when the valve is activated. It is distinct from other propellant systems and is found in a small proportion of skincare products, particularly those in spray or aerosol formats.
As a functional ingredient rather than an active compound, butane does not directly interact with skin. Instead, its role is purely mechanical: to facilitate product dispensing. Once the product is applied to skin, butane evaporates rapidly and does not remain on the surface.
How It Works
Butane functions as a propellant by creating pressure within a sealed aerosol container. When you press the valve, this pressure forces the product formulation out through the nozzle in a fine mist or spray. The butane itself does not mix into the product; instead, it remains separate and provides the driving force for dispensing.
Upon contact with air and skin, butane evaporates almost instantly due to its low boiling point, leaving only the skincare ingredients behind. This rapid evaporation is why aerosol products feel light and non-greasy compared to pump or jar formats.
Clinical Evidence & References
Butane has been used safely as a propellant in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals for decades. Regulatory bodies including the European Commission and the FDA recognise it as a safe ingredient when used as intended in aerosol formulations. There is no substantial evidence of skin irritation or adverse effects from butane exposure during typical use of skincare products.
The ingredient's safety profile is well-established in the context of cosmetic delivery systems, though research specifically examining butane in skincare is limited because it is a functional rather than an active ingredient.

How to Use
If using a butane-propelled aerosol skincare product, shake the container gently before use to ensure even mixing of ingredients. Hold the container upright during application and maintain a consistent distance from the skin as directed on the product label. Store aerosol products in a cool place and away from direct heat or sunlight, as temperature changes can affect pressure within the container.
