C12-13 Alkyl Glyceryl Hydrolyzed Hyaluronate is a modified form of hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring humectant found in skin. This version combines hyaluronic acid with fatty alcohols (alkyl chains), which alters its molecular structure to make it smaller and more lipophilic (fat-loving) than standard hyaluronic acid.The modification allows this ingredient to penetrate the skin more effectively and integrate into the skin barrier more readily, whilst retaining hyaluronic acid's core function: drawing water into the skin and binding it there.

Hyaluronic acid works as a humectant by binding water molecules—a single molecule can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. By drawing this moisture from the environment and deeper skin layers into the epidermis, it plumps the skin and maintains hydration.The addition of alkyl chains makes this version more compatible with the skin's lipid barrier. This allows better penetration and a smoother integration into skin, rather than sitting primarily on the surface like unmodified hyaluronic acid.

This ingredient works best when applied to damp skin—it will pull moisture from both the environment and the skin itself. Layer it under a moisturiser or occlusive product to seal in hydration, particularly in drier climates or seasons. It pairs well with other hydrating ingredients like glycerin or niacinamide, and works at any stage of a routine where hydration is needed.

Generally well-tolerated across skin types. Hyaluronic acid derivatives are considered safe and non-irritating; rare sensitivity or contact dermatitis is possible but uncommon.
