C20-22 Alcohols are fatty alcohols derived from natural sources such as plant waxes and oils. Despite their name, they are not the volatile alcohols found in perfumes or toners; instead, they are waxy, solid compounds at room temperature.
In skincare formulations, they serve primarily as texture modifiers and emulsion stabilisers. They help bind oil and water phases together, prevent separation, and increase the viscosity (thickness) of creams and lotions.
How It Works
C20-22 Alcohols work by positioning themselves at the boundary between oil and water phases in an emulsion. Their molecular structure has both water-loving and oil-loving regions, allowing them to act as a bridge that keeps these normally incompatible components blended together.
Additionally, their long carbon chain means they sit on the skin's surface and within the stratum corneum, creating a mild occlusive layer that helps slow water evaporation. This contributes to the conditioning feel of a product without the greasy sensation of heavier oils.
Clinical Evidence & References
There is limited published clinical research specifically isolating C20-22 Alcohols and their effects on skin. Most evidence comes from cosmetic chemistry studies and product stability testing rather than controlled human trials.
That said, fatty alcohols in general—particularly those in the C20+ range—are recognised as safe emollients and emulsion stabilisers by regulatory bodies including the FDA and European Commission. They are not known to be irritating or comedogenic in typical product concentrations.
How to Use
Since C20-22 Alcohols are a formulation ingredient rather than an active treatment, there are no special usage instructions. Use the product as directed by the manufacturer. These ingredients work behind the scenes to maintain product quality and texture; you will notice their effect through the feel and stability of the cream or lotion rather than any direct skin sensation.
