What Is Ceresin?
Ceresin is a refined mineral wax derived from ozokerite, a naturally occurring fossilised wax. It is a hydrocarbon-based ingredient composed primarily of high molecular weight alkanes and cycloalkanes. In skincare formulations, ceresin functions as a structural component that helps stabilise emulsions, control viscosity, and improve the sensory properties of creams and lotions.
Unlike some plant-derived waxes, ceresin is valued in cosmetics for its neutral colour, refined nature, and predictable behaviour in formulations. It does not have direct therapeutic effects on skin, but rather works behind the scenes to ensure that a product maintains its intended texture, spreadability, and stability over time.
How It Works
Ceresin works by forming a three-dimensional crystal network within formulations. When combined with liquid oils, it creates an organogel—a semi-solid structure that traps the liquid phase and prevents it from separating. This network gives products their characteristic texture and helps them maintain consistency when exposed to temperature changes or physical stress.
On application, this organised structure breaks down under the shear forces of spreading and massage, allowing the product to glide across skin smoothly whilst still delivering its active ingredients. The wax then helps the formulation adhere to the skin surface, which may prolong the contact time between active ingredients and the stratum corneum.
