What Is Cerium Oxide?
Cerium oxide is a rare earth metal oxide commonly used in industrial polishing and abrasive applications. In skincare, it appears primarily as nanoparticles (extremely small particles measured in nanometres), where it functions as an opacifying agent to provide texture and appearance to formulations.
The ingredient has attracted research interest in wound healing and tissue engineering contexts due to its antioxidant properties, which relate to its ability to interact with reactive oxygen species (ROS) — molecules involved in oxidative stress and inflammation.
How It Works
Cerium oxide nanoparticles work primarily through their ability to cycle between two oxidation states (Ce³⁺ and Ce⁴⁺). This reversible cycling allows them to scavenge and neutralise reactive oxygen species, which accumulate during inflammation and oxidative stress. By reducing ROS levels, the ingredient may help lower inflammatory responses and create conditions more favourable for skin healing.
In tissue engineering contexts, cerium oxide nanoparticles are often incorporated into carrier systems (such as hydrogels) to improve biocompatibility, control release, and support the growth of skin cells. However, research on its behaviour in topical cosmetic formulations on intact human skin is still developing.

Research into cerium oxide nanoparticles is primarily laboratory and animal-based at present. Studies suggest the ingredient has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential, and shows promise in wound healing and skin regeneration applications when used in advanced delivery systems. However, human in-vivo studies on topically applied cerium oxide in cosmetic products remain limited.
One in-vitro study found that cerium oxide nanoparticles penetrate the outer skin layers minimally in intact skin, though penetration increased in damaged skin. This suggests systemic absorption through healthy skin is likely low, though more human studies would strengthen our understanding of safety and efficacy in cosmetic use.
