What Is Ceteareth-12?
Ceteareth-12 is a synthetic emulsifier derived from cetyl and stearyl alcohols combined with ethylene oxide. It belongs to a class of ingredients called surfactants, which have one end that attracts water and another that attracts oil. This dual nature allows them to blend two immiscible liquids—oil and water—into a stable, uniform texture.
In skincare products, ceteareth-12 serves primarily as an emulsifier in oil-in-water (O/W) formulations. It helps keep the product's texture consistent and prevents separation over time, which is essential for creams, lotions and other multi-phase formulations.
How It Works
Ceteareth-12 molecules position themselves at the boundary between oil and water phases within a formulation. The water-loving end orients towards the aqueous phase whilst the oil-loving end reaches into the oil phase. This arrangement reduces the natural tension between the two liquids, allowing them to mix and remain mixed rather than separating into layers.
The ingredient does not actively treat skin itself but rather enables other actives in the product to be properly formulated and delivered to the skin in a stable, user-friendly form.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research examining emulsifier systems in sunscreen formulations shows that ceteareth-12 (typically used as part of an emulsifier blend rather than alone) can influence how effectively active ingredients penetrate or remain on the skin. One study investigated how different emulsifier systems, including those containing ceteareth-12, affected the permeation of sunscreen agents through human skin; the choice of emulsifier did affect penetration profiles, though the specific impact varied depending on the other components in the system.
The ingredient itself has a long history of safe use in cosmetics, though research specifically isolating ceteareth-12's independent effects is limited. It is generally considered well-tolerated and is used in roughly 0.3% of skincare products.

How to Use
Ceteareth-12 is a formulation ingredient and requires no special usage instructions; it works behind the scenes to keep your product stable and pleasant to use. Simply apply your product as directed. If you notice any separation or grittiness over time, this may indicate the emulsifier system is breaking down, and the product should be replaced.
