Cholesteryl macadamiate works by depositing a thin, conditioning layer on the skin's surface. This layer mimics components of the skin's natural lipid barrier, which comprises ceramides, cholesteryl esters and fatty acids arranged in a carefully structured multilayer system.By supplementing this lipid profile, the ingredient helps reinforce the stratum corneum's ability to retain water and protect against external irritants. The macadamia oil component provides additional emollient properties whilst the cholesterol portion supports barrier-relevant lipid signalling pathways.

This ingredient is typically found in moisturisers, serums and barrier-repair products. It works well in leave-on formulations where it can remain on the skin to provide sustained conditioning.
