What Is Chromium?

Chromium is a naturally occurring metallic element that appears in cosmetics primarily as a colorant. In skincare formulations, it is used to impart colour rather than for active therapeutic purposes. The ingredient exists in different chemical forms, which can affect how it behaves in and on the skin.

As a colorant, chromium's role is aesthetic rather than functional in terms of skin health or treatment claims.

How It Works

Chromium functions as a pigment by absorbing and reflecting light wavelengths, allowing formulators to achieve desired product colours. It does not have established mechanisms of action related to skin health or barrier function improvement.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research on chromium and skin is limited and primarily focuses on occupational or environmental exposure rather than cosmetic use. Studies of workers exposed to high levels of chromium have shown associations with increased transepidermal water loss and signs of skin barrier disruption. Additionally, research in specific populations has suggested links between elevated chromium exposure and skin ageing symptoms.

However, these findings relate to systemic or chronic dermal exposure at levels far exceeding what would occur through cosmetic application. Evidence supporting chromium as a beneficial skincare ingredient is lacking. The cosmetic concentrations and exposure pathways differ substantially from the occupational exposures studied, so direct application to skincare efficacy is unclear.

How to Use

Chromium-containing products should be used according to product instructions. Because chromium is used primarily for colour, its presence does not typically require special application techniques or timing considerations.

Safety & Precautions

Chromium is generally recognised as safe in cosmetic colorant applications at permitted levels. Individuals with known chromium sensitivity should avoid products containing this ingredient.
