What Is Cinnamomum Zeylanicum Bark Oil?
Cinnamomum zeylanicum bark oil is an essential oil derived from the bark of the cinnamon tree, native to Sri Lanka. It contains cinnamal as its primary aromatic compound, which gives cinnamon its characteristic warm, spicy scent. In skincare, it functions primarily as a fragrance and masking agent, adding sensory appeal to formulations.
The oil is volatile and highly aromatic, meaning it readily releases its scent when exposed to air. It is occasionally included in skincare products at low concentrations for both fragrance and potential skin-conditioning properties.
How It Works
Research on cinnamon bark essential oil suggests it may work by inhibiting the production of inflammatory signalling molecules in skin cells, such as adhesion molecules and chemokines that recruit immune cells to sites of inflammation. In laboratory models using human fibroblasts, the oil has shown anti-proliferative effects and reduced expression of genes associated with chronic inflammation.
However, the concentrations used in these studies may differ significantly from those found in skincare products, and most evidence comes from cell culture rather than human skin studies. The practical anti-inflammatory benefit in a finished skincare product at typical use levels remains unclear.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory research suggests cinnamon bark essential oil can inhibit inflammatory biomarkers and reduce pro-inflammatory gene expression in human skin cells. This indicates potential benefit for inflamed or irritated skin conditions, though human clinical trials are limited.
Importantly, cinnamon is also a known contact allergen. Occupational exposure studies have documented cases of allergic contact dermatitis from cinnamon, including airborne sensitisation in some individuals. This suggests that whilst anti-inflammatory potential exists, the risk of allergic reaction in sensitive individuals is a genuine consideration. The ingredient is listed as an EU allergen and should be avoided by those with known cinnamon sensitivity.
How to Use
If using a product containing cinnamon bark oil, apply as directed by the specific formulation. Given the potential for sensitisation, introduce it gradually into your routine if you have not used cinnamon-containing products before. Discontinue use if you notice redness, itching, or any signs of irritation. Avoid contact with eyes.
