Clascoterone

Clascoterone is a synthetic topical androgen receptor inhibitor—a compound designed to block the activity of androgens (hormones) in the skin. It works locally within the sebaceous glands and hair follicles, where it competes with dihydrotestosterone, a hormone involved in acne development.Unlike systemic treatments such as oral contraceptives or spironolactone, clascoterone acts only on the skin, making it a localised approach to hormonal acne without affecting hormone levels throughout the body.

Androgens (male hormones present in all skin types) stimulate sebaceous glands to produce excess sebum and promote conditions favourable to acne development. Clascoterone binds to androgen receptors in these glands and follicles, blocking the hormonal signals that would otherwise trigger increased oil production and acne-related changes.By reducing this androgen-driven activity locally in the skin, clascoterone may help reduce acne lesion formation without the systemic effects of oral hormonal treatments.

Clascoterone cream is typically applied topically to affected areas once or twice daily. It can be used alongside other acne treatments, though combining it with multiple active ingredients should be done carefully to avoid irritation. Allow the skin time to adjust—improvements may take several weeks to become apparent. Always follow product instructions, as formulation and strength may vary.
