Cocamidopropylamine Oxide

Cocamidopropylamine oxide is a surfactant derived from coconut oil. It belongs to a class of molecules called tertiary amine oxides, which are engineered to have both water-loving and oil-loving properties. This dual nature makes it effective at breaking down oils and dirt.In cosmetic formulations, it functions primarily as a cleansing agent and foam booster in hair and body products. It also has mild conditioning properties, helping to improve the feel and manageability of hair. It appears in roughly 0.1% of skincare products, though it is more common in cleansing and haircare ranges.

As a surfactant, cocamidopropylamine oxide works by surrounding oil and dirt molecules, allowing them to be rinsed away with water. Its molecular structure has one end that attracts oil and another that attracts water, making it a natural bridge between the two.In hair formulations, it also deposits a light conditioning film onto the hair shaft, which can improve shine and reduce friction between strands. This is why it is often found alongside other cleansing agents in shampoos and body washes.

This ingredient is typically used in rinse-off formulations such as shampoos, body washes and cleansing bars, rather than leave-on products. Use as directed on the product label. If used in a cleanser, apply to damp skin or hair, lather gently, and rinse thoroughly with water.

Cocamidopropylamine oxide is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations at the concentrations used. It is a mild surfactant, though like all cleansing agents, excessive or prolonged contact with eyes should be avoided.
