What Is Crataegus Monogyna Fruit Extract?
Crataegus monogyna fruit extract is derived from hawthorn berries, a traditional botanical ingredient with a long history in herbal medicine. The extract is rich in polyphenols—naturally occurring plant compounds with antioxidant properties—including chlorogenic acid, procyanidins, and epicatechin. In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a skin conditioning agent.

How It Works
The mechanism centres on the extract's polyphenol content, which acts as a scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS)—unstable molecules generated by UV exposure and environmental stress. By neutralising these damaging molecules, the extract helps reduce oxidative stress in skin cells.
The extract also appears to influence gene expression related to collagen metabolism and inflammatory pathways. Research indicates it may help regulate matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes responsible for collagen breakdown, whilst supporting the production of new collagen fibres.
