Cupressus Sempervirens Oil

Cupressus sempervirens oil is an essential oil derived from the Mediterranean cypress tree. It is obtained through steam distillation or hydrodistillation of the plant material and contains a complex mixture of volatile compounds, primarily monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes.In skincare products, this ingredient is primarily used as a masking agent—meaning it provides fragrance rather than a direct therapeutic function. It appears in a small proportion of formulations (roughly 0.1% of skincare products) and is typically present in minimal concentrations.

As a masking agent, cypress oil works primarily through olfaction—it provides scent to mask or complement other ingredients in a formula. The oil's volatile compounds evaporate from the skin surface and are perceived by olfactory receptors.Beyond fragrance, the essential oil contains constituents that have been studied in laboratory settings for various biological properties, though their relevance in topical skincare at typical use concentrations remains unclear.

Cypress oil is typically used at very low concentrations in finished skincare products, often below 1%. If you are using a product containing this ingredient, apply as you would any other skincare formulation. Discontinue use if you develop signs of irritation.

Cupressus sempervirens oil is generally well-tolerated in skincare products. Essential oils can occasionally cause sensitisation or irritation in sensitive individuals; patch testing is advisable if you have a known sensitivity to essential oils.
