What Is Defatted Rice Bran?
Defatted rice bran is the residue left after removing the oil from rice bran. It contains the nutrient-rich outer layer of the rice grain, packed with proteins, carbohydrates, and phytochemicals including anthocyanins and phenolic compounds. In skincare formulations, it functions as a skin conditioning agent.
The ingredient has been studied in both traditional and modern skincare contexts, particularly in research examining how rice-derived materials interact with skin cells. Its composition makes it a source of natural bioactive compounds that may support skin health.
How It Works
Defatted rice bran works primarily through two mechanisms. First, its phytochemical profile—particularly anthocyanins and phenolic compounds—acts as a source of antioxidants, helping to reduce oxidative stress in skin cells. Second, it conditions the skin by improving moisture retention and skin barrier function through its polysaccharide and protein content.
In laboratory studies, extracts of defatted rice bran have demonstrated activity against tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production. However, the translation of these cell-based findings to measurable effects in human skin requires further investigation.
Clinical Evidence & References
In vitro research on defatted rice bran extracts shows promise. Studies have demonstrated tyrosinase inhibition and reduced melanin production in cultured melanoma cells, alongside antioxidant activity in cell-free assays. Research on purple rice bran extracts has also suggested potential to stimulate collagen production in fibroblast cultures.
Human clinical studies on defatted rice bran specifically are limited. While the ingredient's antioxidant and conditioning benefits are supported by its chemical composition, robust clinical evidence in human skin remains sparse. Further study would help clarify the extent and consistency of skin benefits when applied topically.
How to Use
Defatted rice bran is typically found in cleansers, masks, and conditioning formulations. As with most plant-derived ingredients, it works best as part of a comprehensive skincare routine rather than as a standalone treatment. There is no evidence of benefit from using products containing this ingredient more frequently than directed on the label.
