Dehydroxanthan Gum

Dehydroxanthan gum is a modified polysaccharide derived from xanthan gum through a dehydration process. It functions primarily as a thickening and stabilising agent in skincare formulations, helping to maintain uniform texture and prevent separation of ingredients over time.In topical products, it creates a light film on the skin surface and helps control the viscosity of serums, creams, and lotions. Because it is found in approximately 0.2% of skincare products, it remains a relatively uncommon ingredient compared to other common thickeners.

Dehydroxanthan gum works by increasing the viscosity of a formulation, which slows the movement of particles and prevents them from settling or separating. This stabilising effect helps keep active ingredients evenly distributed throughout the product.When applied to skin, it can form a light, breathable film that may help reduce transepidermal water loss without occluding the skin or leaving a greasy residue. Its film-forming properties make it useful in products designed to provide a smooth base for makeup or skincare layering.
