What Is Dihydromyricetin?
Dihydromyricetin (DHM) is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in various plants, including ampelopsis and rattan. In skincare, it functions as a skin conditioning agent with potential activity against age-related changes in the skin.
Unlike ingredients that work primarily through hydration or surface effects, dihydromyricetin is proposed to work by influencing epigenetic processes—the chemical switches that control how genes are expressed without altering DNA itself. This mechanism represents an emerging area of skin aging research.
How It Works
Dihydromyricetin is theorised to work by inhibiting DNMT1, an enzyme responsible for maintaining DNA methylation patterns during cell division. By modestly reducing this activity, it may help restore epigenetic patterns associated with younger skin and improve gene expression in skin cells.
Additionally, DHM may function as a RAGE inhibitor, potentially blocking the effects of advanced glycation end products that accumulate with age and contribute to loss of skin elasticity and increased stiffness.

Early-stage research suggests dihydromyricetin may have anti-aging potential. In animal studies, DHM treatment appeared to alleviate signs of accelerated skin aging and enhanced skin elasticity. A small human study of 60 participants across different skin tones found that a serum containing DHM was associated with improvements in epigenetic markers of skin age.
However, evidence remains preliminary. Most studies to date are laboratory or animal-based, and human clinical data is limited. Further research is needed to establish optimal concentrations, long-term efficacy, and benefits across different skin concerns. The ingredient is not yet widely established in mainstream skincare, so expectations should be calibrated accordingly.
