Dodecyl Gallate

Dodecyl gallate is a synthetic ester derived from gallic acid, a naturally occurring phenolic compound. It is a lipid-soluble antioxidant, meaning it dissolves well in oils and fatty substances, allowing it to penetrate and work within the skin's lipid-rich layers.In skincare formulations, dodecyl gallate functions as an antioxidant, helping to neutralise free radicals and reduce oxidative stress. It is also used as a preservative in some cosmetic products to prevent ingredient degradation and maintain product stability.

Dodecyl gallate works by donating electrons to free radicals, stabilising them and preventing them from damaging skin cells and collagen. Its lipid-soluble nature allows it to embed itself in the skin's fatty layers, where it can protect cell membranes and lipids from oxidative stress.In formulations, it also prevents the oxidation of other ingredients, helping them remain effective for longer.

Dodecyl gallate is typically used at low concentrations in finished products (often below 1%) and requires no special application routine. If using a product containing this ingredient, apply as directed by the product instructions, usually once or twice daily depending on the product type.

Dodecyl gallate has been shown to have a strong sensitising capacity, particularly with repeated or prolonged skin contact. Patch testing is recommended before use, especially for those with sensitive skin or a history of contact dermatitis.
