What Is Epilobium Fleischeri Extract?

Epilobium fleischeri extract is derived from a mountain plant species and is used in skincare primarily for its skin conditioning properties. The extract contains compounds that appear to influence bacterial populations on the skin's surface.

This ingredient works at a biochemical level by inhibiting an enzyme called 5-α reductase, which plays a role in sebum production and may influence the composition of the skin's natural microbial community.

How It Works

Epilobium fleischeri extract inhibits 5-α reductase, an enzyme involved in converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Since DHT influences sebaceous gland activity and may affect the skin microbiota environment, reducing this pathway could theoretically help modulate which bacterial species thrive on the skin's surface.

Different areas of the face—such as the oily forehead versus drier cheeks—support different microbial communities. By altering the biochemical environment, this extract may influence which bacteria are favoured in each zone.

Clinical Evidence & References

A small randomised, placebo-controlled study (23 participants, 4 weeks) examined the microbiota effects of topical Epilobium fleischeri extract application across five facial areas using genetic sequencing. The research suggests the extract does modulate facial microbiota composition, though results were limited to this single study population.

Evidence for broader skincare benefits remains limited. The research focused on microbiota changes rather than visible skin improvements, so we cannot yet confidently claim effects on acne, oiliness, or other common concerns without further investigation.

How to Use

Epilobium fleischeri extract is found in very few products (roughly 0.1% of skincare formulations), so options are limited. When present, it is typically used as part of a broader formulation. Apply as directed by the product instructions, usually as part of your morning or evening routine.

Safety & Precautions

Limited safety data is available for this ingredient, though no significant adverse effects were reported in the available clinical study. Patch test if you have sensitive or reactive skin.
