Ethyl Palmate

Ethyl palmate is the ethyl ester of palmitic acid, a saturated fatty acid derived from palm oil. It functions as an emollient—a substance that fills gaps between skin cells and helps the outer layer retain moisture and softness.In skincare formulations, ethyl palmate works primarily to improve texture and feel. It's often used in creams, lotions and serums where a smooth, non-greasy finish is desired, as it spreads easily and absorbs reasonably well into the skin.

Emollients like ethyl palmate work by occlusion and humectant action. They form a light barrier on the skin's surface that slows water evaporation, while also penetrating slightly into the outer layers to soften and condition them. Unlike heavier oils, ethyl palmate has a relatively low molecular weight, so it spreads easily and doesn't feel occlusive or heavy.The ingredient's structure—a fatty acid attached to an alcohol—makes it compatible with both water and oil phases in formulations, which is why it's useful in a range of product types.

Ethyl palmate is typically incorporated into formulations by manufacturers rather than used as a standalone ingredient. When present in serums or creams, it benefits most skin types and can be used daily as part of a moisturiser or treatment product. Apply to clean, damp skin for optimal hydration, and allow a few minutes for absorption before layering other products.

Ethyl palmate is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for topical skincare use. Allergic contact dermatitis is rare but possible, as with any cosmetic ingredient; discontinue use if irritation occurs.
