What Is Foeniculum Vulgare Seed Extract?

Foeniculum vulgare seed extract is derived from fennel seeds, a plant with a long history in traditional medicine. The extract contains compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are thought to help protect and condition the skin.

In skincare formulations, it functions as a skin conditioning agent, typically used at concentrations between 0% and 9%. It remains relatively uncommon in commercial skincare products, appearing in approximately 0.1% of formulations.

How It Works

Fennel seed extract contains compounds that activate the body's natural antioxidant defence systems. The most researched pathway involves stimulating Nrf2, a protein that increases production of protective antioxidant enzymes within skin cells.

Additionally, the extract appears to inhibit inflammatory signalling pathways (specifically MAPK pathways) and reduce the activity of matrix metalloproteinases—enzymes that break down collagen and elastin in response to UV damage and other stressors.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research on fennel seed extract in skincare remains limited but shows some promise. Laboratory studies using cultured skin cells have demonstrated antioxidant effects and reduced markers of UV-induced damage, including reduced reactive oxygen species and inflammation.

In vivo studies in animal models have suggested potential protective effects against UV-induced photoaging and chemically-induced tumour development. However, human clinical trials in skincare are sparse, so the degree to which these effects translate to topical application in real-world conditions remains uncertain. Further research would help clarify efficacy and optimal concentrations for skincare use.

How to Use

Fennel seed extract is typically found in serums, moisturisers and treatment products where it works well alongside other antioxidants and skin conditioning ingredients. Use as directed by the individual product—usually daily as part of your morning or evening routine. There is no particular need for rotation or cycling.

Safety & Precautions

Fennel seed extract is generally well-tolerated in cosmetic concentrations. Those with known fennel sensitivity or allergies should avoid products containing this ingredient.
