What Is Ganoderma Lucidum Extract?
Ganoderma lucidum, also known as reishi, is a medicinal mushroom native to Asia and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. The extract contains bioactive compounds including polysaccharides and triterpenes, which are believed to contribute to its biological activity.
In skincare formulations, Ganoderma lucidum extract is used as a skin-protecting ingredient. Its role centres on supporting cellular function and helping skin manage oxidative stress—the type of damage caused by environmental factors like UV exposure and pollution.
How It Works
The extract appears to work primarily by reducing oxidative stress within skin cells. When cells are exposed to UV radiation or other environmental stressors, they produce reactive oxygen species (ROS)—unstable molecules that damage cellular structures. Ganoderma lucidum extract may help neutralise these molecules and support the cell's own protective mechanisms.
Additionally, the extract may influence mitochondrial health. Mitochondria are responsible for producing cellular energy and are particularly vulnerable to UV damage. By maintaining mitochondrial membrane integrity and supporting mitochondrial function, the ingredient may help skin cells remain resilient and functional.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory and animal studies suggest Ganoderma lucidum extract has anti-oxidative properties and may mitigate some effects of UV exposure, including epidermal thickening and protein depletion in the dermis. One study in mice found that a preparation containing both spore and fruiting body components reduced skin tumour incidence following chronic UV exposure, though individual components showed variable efficacy.
However, evidence in human subjects remains limited. Most published research has been conducted in cell cultures or animal models. Further clinical trials in humans would strengthen confidence in its efficacy for skincare use, and optimal concentrations for cosmetic application are not yet well-established.

How to Use
Ganoderma lucidum extract is typically found in serums, moisturisers, and protective formulations at concentrations between 4% and 65%, though it appears in fewer than 1% of skincare products. It is generally incorporated as part of a multi-ingredient formula rather than used as a standalone treatment. For best results, use consistently as part of your daily routine alongside a broad-spectrum SPF, since UV protection remains the most evidence-backed approach to skin defence.
