What Is Glyceryl Arachidonate?
Glyceryl arachidonate is a glycerin ester derived from arachidic acid, a fatty acid found naturally in some plant oils. In skincare formulations, it functions as an emollient—a substance that softens and smooths the skin—and as an emulsifying agent that helps blend oil and water-based ingredients together.
This ingredient belongs to a family of glyceryl monoesters, compounds widely used in cosmetics for their skin-conditioning properties. It is relatively uncommon, appearing in approximately 0.1% of skincare products on the market.
How It Works
Glyceryl arachidonate works by depositing a thin occlusive layer on the skin's surface. This layer reduces transepidermal water loss—the evaporation of moisture through the skin—allowing the skin to retain hydration more effectively. The emulsifying properties also allow oil-soluble and water-soluble ingredients to coexist in the same formulation.
Research suggests that a portion of glyceryl arachidonate can be broken down by skin enzymes into arachidonic acid, a compound involved in skin inflammation responses. The significance of this conversion in cosmetic products remains uncertain.
Clinical Evidence & References
Glyceryl arachidonate has been included in comprehensive safety assessments by cosmetic ingredient regulators and is considered safe for use in skincare at typical concentrations. In vitro studies indicate that the ingredient penetrates human skin to a measurable degree, though the practical implications of this in finished products are not fully established.
Evidence for specific skin benefits beyond general emollient and conditioning properties is limited. Most of what we know about this ingredient comes from safety and penetration studies rather than efficacy trials in human subjects.

How to Use
Glyceryl arachidonate is typically used in moisturisers, creams, and serums as part of a broader formulation. Since it functions as an emollient and not an active treatment, consistency of use will determine results; daily application is generally recommended for maintaining skin softness and barrier health. It works well alongside other hydrating and conditioning ingredients.
