Glyceryl Caprate

Glyceryl caprate is an emollient belonging to the glyceryl monoester family. It is derived from glycerin (a humectant) combined with capric acid, a naturally occurring fatty acid found in coconut oil. This combination creates a mild conditioning agent that sits on the skin's surface.In skincare formulations, glyceryl caprate functions primarily as a skin-conditioning emollient. It is used in relatively small amounts across cosmetic products, appearing in approximately 0.1% of skincare formulations globally.

Glyceryl caprate works by depositing a thin layer of conditioning agents on the skin. Unlike heavier occlusives, it provides a lighter form of moisturisation that does not trap heat or create a strong barrier effect on the skin surface.The ingredient may also function as a penetration enhancer in some formulations, potentially aiding the absorption of other active ingredients, though this role is secondary to its primary conditioning function.

Glyceryl caprate is typically incorporated into finished products by manufacturers rather than used as a standalone ingredient. It works well in lightweight serums, lotions and emulsions where a soft, non-greasy feel is desired.
