What Is Glycosyl Trehalose?
Glycosyl trehalose is a disaccharide (a type of sugar) derived from natural sources. It functions in skincare formulations as a humectant and film-former, meaning it helps draw moisture into the skin and can create a protective barrier on the surface.
The ingredient is relatively uncommon in skincare products, appearing in roughly 0.4% of formulations. Its presence is typically part of multi-ingredient systems designed to address specific skin concerns, rather than as a standalone active.
How It Works
As a humectant, glycosyl trehalose draws water from the environment and deeper skin layers to the surface, helping to maintain skin hydration. Its film-forming capacity allows it to sit on the skin and minimise moisture loss.
Emerging research suggests it may also help protect skin proteins from glycation — a process where reducing sugars bind to proteins without enzymatic control, leading to structural damage over time. However, most evidence comes from laboratory and ex vivo studies, and more research in living skin is needed to confirm its practical effectiveness at typical product concentrations.
Clinical Evidence & References
In vitro and ex vivo studies suggest that trehalose, particularly when combined with other ingredients like hyaluronic acid, may help reduce the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) in skin tissue. These laboratory findings are promising for understanding glycation-related aging.
However, human clinical studies demonstrating measurable anti-glycation benefits from topical products containing glycosyl trehalose remain limited. The concentration at which it appears in most skincare products (typically very low) may not deliver the effects observed in controlled laboratory settings. Further research in live human skin would help establish its real-world efficacy.

How to Use
Glycosyl trehalose is almost always part of a formulated product rather than used alone. Use it as directed within your chosen serum, moisturiser or treatment. There is no evidence that higher concentrations deliver proportionally better results, so follow the product instructions and allow several weeks of consistent use before assessing benefits.
