What Is Harungana Madagascariensis Extract?
Harungana madagascariensis extract is derived from a plant traditionally used in African skincare practices. In cosmetic formulations, it functions as a skin conditioning agent that works at a cellular level to support skin renewal and resilience.
The extract contains bioactive compounds that appear to interact with skin cells in ways similar to retinoids—powerful anti-aging ingredients—but potentially with fewer of the irritation concerns associated with synthetic retinoids.
How It Works
The extract appears to stimulate fibroblasts—the cells responsible for producing collagen and other structural proteins—through similar pathways to retinol. This encourages cells to increase production of collagen and other skin-supporting compounds that naturally decline with age.
Additionally, the bioactive fractions in the extract demonstrate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, which helps neutralise free radical damage and support skin barrier health. This multi-mechanism approach may explain why it can address several signs of ageing simultaneously.
Clinical Evidence & References
Preliminary research on human subjects found that a cream containing this extract produced measurable improvements in wrinkles, skin firmness, elasticity, and colour uniformity within 28 days—comparable to retinol creams in the trial. In-vitro and ex-vivo studies have confirmed that the extract upregulates genes associated with collagen synthesis and skin repair, and shows protective effects against UV-induced damage.
Whilst the evidence is promising, the body of research remains limited and the studies are relatively small. More robust, long-term clinical trials would strengthen our confidence in the ingredient's efficacy and optimal use. The extract appears well-tolerated, but comparative data on irritation rates versus established retinoids is not yet comprehensive.

How to Use
This ingredient is typically found in serums, moisturisers, and creams intended for anti-ageing routines. Since research suggests effects emerge within weeks, consistent daily use is likely necessary. It can generally be incorporated into morning or evening routines, though sunscreen is essential during daytime use given the skin-renewal activity. If using alongside other active ingredients, introduce gradually to assess tolerance.
