What Is Heparan Sulfate?
Heparan sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan—a naturally occurring carbohydrate molecule—found throughout the body, including in skin tissue. In cosmetic formulations, a modified low molecular weight version (LMW-HS) is typically used, as this allows for better skin penetration compared to the larger, naturally occurring form.
As a skin conditioning agent, heparan sulfate is thought to work by mimicking the skin's own structural components and supporting its natural repair mechanisms. It plays a role in cell signalling and tissue health, making it relevant to skincare formulations aimed at aging or damaged skin.
How It Works
Heparan sulfate regulates how cells interact with each other and with inflammatory signals. In the skin, it is a component of the glycocalyx—a protective layer on cell surfaces—where it can mask adhesion sites that trigger inflammation. When skin is chronically stressed by environmental damage (sun exposure, pollution), this glycocalyx can become depleted.
By supplementing the skin with a low molecular weight form, topical formulations may help restore these protective mechanisms and reduce the recruitment of inflammatory cells to the skin, whilst also supporting the skin's natural repair and hydration processes.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research suggests that heparan sulfate plays a protective role in inflammatory skin conditions. Studies in mice with psoriasis-like inflammation found that a heparan sulfate mimetic helped preserve the molecule and reduce inflammatory cell recruitment. However, this research is largely preclinical.
Evidence for topical low molecular weight heparan sulfate in human skin is more limited. Dermatological interest focuses on its potential to restore aged skin homeostasis and reduce signs of photodamage, but clinical trial data in humans is sparse. More robust evidence would strengthen current understanding of its efficacy in cosmetic skincare.

Heparan sulfate is typically found in moisturisers and serums designed for mature, damaged, or sensitised skin. Apply to clean skin as part of your regular routine.
