What Is Hexyl Laurate?
Hexyl laurate is an ester — lauric acid joined to hexyl alcohol — used as a lightweight emollient. Esters like this one are chosen for how they feel: dry, slippy and fast-absorbing, without the greasy residue heavier oils can leave.
It is a texture ingredient. Its job is to soften skin and to carry other ingredients evenly across it, not to treat a concern. You will typically find it in sunscreens, primers and lotions where a light finish matters.
How It Works
An emollient works by filling the microscopic gaps between skin cells at the surface. That does two things: it smooths the surface so skin feels softer, and it slows the rate at which water escapes.
Hexyl laurate's low-viscosity, fast-spreading structure means it goes on readily and sinks in quickly rather than sitting on top. It also improves how a formula spreads, which is why it appears in products that need to go on evenly, such as mineral sunscreens.
