What Is Hizikia Fusiforme Extract?
Hizikia fusiforme extract is derived from a brown seaweed commonly used in East Asian cuisine and traditional medicine. The extract is rich in polysaccharides, including fucoidan and alginic acid, which are water-soluble compounds with notable antioxidant properties.
In skincare formulations, this ingredient functions as a skin conditioner, working to support the skin's natural protective mechanisms and maintain hydration. It is used in relatively small concentrations, appearing in fewer than 1% of skincare products on the market.
How It Works
The extract's active compounds, particularly fucoidan, work as antioxidants by reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) — unstable molecules that accumulate in skin exposed to UV radiation and pollution. By lowering ROS levels, the ingredient helps prevent the inflammatory cascade that can lead to collagen and elastase breakdown.
The polysaccharides also form a conditioning film on the skin surface, helping to maintain hydration and support the skin barrier. Laboratory studies on human skin cells have shown the extract can inhibit collagenase and elastase enzymes, which are responsible for breaking down structural proteins.
Clinical Evidence & References
Laboratory studies conducted on human dermal fibroblasts (skin cells) show that Hizikia fusiforme polysaccharides significantly reduce UV-induced oxidative stress and help preserve collagen in a dose-dependent manner. These results are encouraging for photo-protective applications, though human clinical trials remain limited.
Animal studies have suggested potential benefits for skin resilience and barrier function, but these findings have not yet been extensively validated in human subjects. The evidence base is modest, and more in-vivo research would strengthen our understanding of its efficacy in real-world skincare use.

How to Use
This ingredient is typically incorporated into serums, moisturisers, and treatment products at low concentrations. Use as directed on your product label, either once or twice daily depending on your routine. It works well alongside other antioxidants and hydrating ingredients, and poses no particular compatibility issues with common skincare actives.
