What Is Human Anti-Propionibacterium Acnes Monoclonal Antibody?
Human anti-Propionibacterium acnes monoclonal antibody is a laboratory-engineered protein that specifically recognises and binds to Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a bacterium implicated in acne development. Monoclonal antibodies are produced by cloning a single B cell to create many identical copies of one antibody, making them highly selective in their targets.
Unlike broad-spectrum antibacterial agents, this ingredient works by targeting a specific pathogenic bacterium rather than disrupting the entire skin microbiome. It functions as an antiseborrhoeic agent, helping to reduce sebum-related bacterial colonisation that can contribute to comedonal and inflammatory acne.
How It Works
The monoclonal antibody binds to specific antigens (recognition markers) on the surface of P. acnes bacteria. This binding inactivates or marks the bacteria for removal by the immune system, reducing its ability to colonise the skin and trigger inflammation.
Because the antibody is highly specific to P. acnes, it does not indiscriminately damage the wider skin microbiome, which may help preserve the natural balance of skin flora.

Research into monoclonal antibodies targeting P. acnes is ongoing, and clinical efficacy data in cosmetic formulations remains limited.
