What Is Hydrofluorocarbon 152a?
Hydrofluorocarbon 152a (HFC 152a) is a synthetic propellant—a pressurised gas used to dispense skincare products from aerosol containers. It belongs to a class of hydrofluorocarbons, which are fluorinated organic compounds designed to replace older chlorofluorocarbon propellants that were phased out due to ozone depletion concerns.
In skincare formulations, HFC 152a serves a purely functional role: it creates the pressure needed to deliver the product (typically a treatment serum, mist, or sunscreen) in a fine, even spray. It does not remain on the skin after application and does not contribute to the active treatment benefits of a product.
How It Works
HFC 152a is stored under pressure within an aerosol container. When you press the valve, the propellant rapidly evaporates and expands, pushing the skincare product out as a fine mist or spray. The propellant itself disperses into the air immediately upon release and plays no role in the formula's efficacy once applied to skin.
