Hydrogen acts as a selective scavenger of hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite — two particularly damaging types of free radical. Unlike some antioxidants that work through broad enzyme systems, hydrogen's small molecular size allows it to cross cellular membranes and reach mitochondria, where oxidative stress often originates.

The mechanism appears to involve a redox reaction: hydrogen donates electrons to unstable free radical molecules, stabilising them into inert substances. This protects proteins, lipids, and DNA within skin cells from oxidative damage. Some evidence suggests hydrogen may also modulate inflammatory pathways, though the full mechanism in human skin requires further investigation.

Current research on hydrogen in skincare is promising but limited. Studies in animal models show hydrogen-rich formulations can reduce oxidative stress markers and inflammatory responses in skin conditions including psoriasis-like inflammation and ischaemia-reperfusion injury. In photoaging research, hydrogen combined with microcurrent technology and magnesium showed synergistic effects on wrinkle reduction in experimental settings.

However, most published studies involve animal models, hydrogen-rich water preparations, or hydrogen delivered via specialised delivery systems rather than topical cosmetic applications. Human clinical trial data on topical hydrogen formulations remains sparse, so benefits in routine skincare use cannot yet be definitively quantified. Further investigation in human subjects would strengthen confidence in its efficacy for cosmetic purposes.

Hydrogen is typically found in skincare products formulated to maintain its stability, such as hydrogen-rich water serums or products with specialised delivery systems. Use as directed on product labels. Hydrogen works synergistically with other antioxidants and sun protection, so combine with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen during daytime use for optimal photoprotection. There is no established optimal concentration for cosmetic use, so product instructions should guide application frequency and amount.
