What Is Hydrogenated Microcrystalline Wax?
Hydrogenated microcrystalline wax is a processed wax derived from petroleum byproducts, refined and saturated with hydrogen to create a stable, solid ingredient. It appears as a white to off-white waxy substance with a melting point that allows it to remain solid at room temperature.
In skincare formulations, it functions primarily as a binder and viscosity controller, helping to thicken products and stabilise emulsions so that oils and water-based ingredients remain properly mixed. It also contributes to the texture and spreadability of creams, balms, and other topical formulations.
How It Works
Hydrogenated microcrystalline wax works by increasing the viscosity of a formulation, meaning it thickens the product and gives it body. When incorporated into an emulsion (a blend of oil and water), it helps stabilise the mixture by positioning itself at the interface between the two phases, preventing them from separating.
Its waxy nature also means it can form a thin occlusive film on the skin surface, which may help reduce water loss from the skin—though this effect is typically gentle rather than dramatic.
