What Is Hydrogenated Oat Kernel Oil?
Hydrogenated oat kernel oil is a processed form of oat oil in which the unsaturated fats have been hydrogenated — a process that stabilises the oil and raises its melting point. This makes it more shelf-stable and easier to formulate into creams, lotions and balms than raw oat oil.
In skincare, it functions primarily as an emollient and skin conditioner, meaning it helps soften the outer layer of skin and trap moisture. It's also used in hair products for similar conditioning purposes.
How It Works
Emollients work by inserting themselves into the spaces between skin cells in the stratum corneum (the outer layer). This fills gaps, smooths rough texture, and reduces transepidermal water loss — the evaporation of moisture from the skin's surface.
Because hydrogenated oat kernel oil is semi-solid at room temperature, it spreads easily and provides a light, non-greasy feel compared to liquid oils, whilst still delivering emollient benefits.
Clinical Evidence & References
Oats have a long history of use in skincare and possess some compounds with mild anti-inflammatory properties, though most published research focuses on whole oat extracts rather than hydrogenated oat kernel oil specifically. The ingredient is well-tolerated in cosmetic formulations and is considered safe for topical use.
Evidence for hydrogenated oat kernel oil on its own is limited. Benefits are largely attributable to its emollient function, which is a well-understood mechanism rather than a novel claim.
How to Use
Hydrogenated oat kernel oil is typically incorporated into formulations by manufacturers rather than used as a standalone product. When present in moisturisers, serums or body products, apply to damp skin for better absorption and moisture-locking. It works well in layered routines and is suitable for daily use.
