Hydrogenated Palm Oil

Hydrogenated palm oil is a solid or semi-solid fat derived from the palm fruit. Through hydrogenation—a process that adds hydrogen molecules to the oil—it becomes more stable and shelf-stable than its unrefined counterpart. This modification makes it useful in cosmetic formulations as both a conditioning agent and a functional ingredient that helps bind other components together.In skincare, it serves primarily as an emollient and viscosity controller. It helps create a smooth texture in creams and lotions whilst also providing a light conditioning effect to the skin's surface.

Hydrogenated palm oil works by sitting on the skin's surface and reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL)—the natural evaporation of moisture from the skin. This occlusive property helps lock in hydration, which is particularly useful in moisturisers designed for dry or dehydrated skin.Within a formula, it also acts as a thickener and stabiliser, helping to maintain the emulsion between water and oil phases so that the product remains homogenous and doesn't separate over time.

Hydrogenated palm oil is typically encountered as part of a complete formulation rather than as a standalone ingredient. When using a product containing it, apply as directed by the manufacturer. It tends to work best when layered with water-based or hydrating products, as it performs better as an occlusive rather than a primary hydrator.

Hydrogenated palm oil is generally well-tolerated and is approved for use in cosmetics in most regions. Some individuals with sensitivity to plant oils may experience mild irritation, though this is uncommon.
