During processing, the oil is hydrogenated (hydrogen is added to stabilise it) and phosphorylated (a phosphate group is introduced), creating an ingredient with dual functionality as both an emollient and emulsifier.In skincare formulations, it works to soften and condition the skin while also helping to bind water and oil-based ingredients together, creating stable, uniform textures. As an emollient, hydrogenated vegetable glycerides phosphate sits on the skin surface and within the outer layers of the epidermis, filling microscopic gaps and reducing water evaporation. Its occlusive properties are mild compared to heavier oils, making it suitable for layering in formulations.As an emulsifier, the phosphate modification gives it amphiphilic properties—meaning it has both water-loving and oil-loving parts. This allows it to surround oil droplets in a water base (or vice versa), keeping them dispersed and preventing the product from separating into distinct layers.
