What Is Lactobacillus/Soymilk Ferment?
Lactobacillus/soymilk ferment is created by fermenting soymilk with beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria strains. During fermentation, the bacteria break down soy compounds and produce bioactive metabolites, creating a nutrient-rich extract that differs from unfermented soymilk.
In skincare formulations, this ingredient functions primarily as a humectant and skin conditioner. It helps to draw moisture into the skin and support the skin's natural barrier function. The fermentation process may enhance its bioavailability and beneficial properties compared to non-fermented soy ingredients.
How It Works
The fermentation process produces bacterial metabolites and breaks down soy isoflavones into more readily absorbed forms. These compounds can work on multiple levels: they attract water to the skin (humectant effect), support the skin's natural protective barrier, and contribute antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity at a cellular level.
The exact mechanisms vary depending on which Lactobacillus strain is used in fermentation, as different bacteria produce different metabolic byproducts.
Clinical Evidence & References
Animal studies suggest that certain fermented soymilk extracts have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, reducing oxidative stress markers and supporting skin health in models of premature ageing. A small human pilot study found that daily intake of fermented soymilk containing Lactobacillus casei Shirota showed measurable improvements in skin condition over 8 weeks, though the sample size was limited.
Evidence for topical application in skincare products is more limited. Most research has focused on oral consumption or laboratory models rather than direct skin application, so claims about topical efficacy should be treated with appropriate caution.

How to Use
This ingredient is typically found in serums, essences and moisturisers at concentrations that appear modest. It works well in hydrating formulas and can be layered with other actives. As with any new product, introduce it gradually if you have sensitive skin, particularly if the formula contains multiple fermented or probiotic ingredients.
