What Is Laminaria Cloustoni Extract?

Laminaria cloustoni extract is derived from a species of brown seaweed (kelp) found in Atlantic waters. The extract is rich in polysaccharides—complex carbohydrates that form the structural backbone of the plant cell wall. When applied topically, these polysaccharides work to reinforce the skin's natural protective mechanisms.

In cosmetic formulations, this ingredient functions as a skin protectant, helping to maintain moisture levels and support the skin's barrier function. It is typically incorporated into moisturisers, serums, and treatment products at modest concentrations.

How It Works

Laminaria polysaccharides function as humectants and film-formers. They draw moisture from deeper skin layers and the environment, then bind water molecules at the surface, creating a hydrating effect. This moisture retention strengthens the skin's barrier function, which naturally becomes less efficient with age and environmental stress.

At a cellular level, preliminary research suggests the extract may influence the expression of enzymes involved in collagen breakdown (matrix metalloproteinases) and stress signalling pathways. This may help preserve skin structure and resilience, though human studies in this area remain limited.

Clinical Evidence & References

Controlled studies on Laminaria japonica extract—a closely related species—have demonstrated measurable increases in skin hydration, with 10% extract formulations showing approximately 14% improvement in hydration levels within 2 hours of application, sustained over 8 hours. Transepidermal water loss (moisture evaporation) was also reduced by around 20%, indicating improved barrier function.

Animal studies have shown promising results for collagen preservation and anti-inflammatory activity, with upregulation of collagen-protective factors and suppression of inflammatory signalling. However, equivalent evidence in human skin is currently limited, so these findings should be considered preliminary. More research is needed to fully characterise the ingredient's efficacy in ageing and inflammatory skin conditions.

How to Use

Laminaria cloustoni extract is typically used as part of a moisturiser or serum applied once or twice daily. It works well in formulations combined with other hydrating or barrier-supporting ingredients such as glycerol, ceramides, or hyaluronic acid. Allow 5–10 minutes for absorption before layering additional products.

Safety & Precautions

Laminaria extract is generally well-tolerated across skin types. Those with iodine sensitivity or seaweed allergies should check product labelling, as seaweed-derived ingredients may contain iodine.
