Lauryl PEG-8 Dimethicone

Lauryl PEG-8 Dimethicone is a silicone-based surfactant derived from dimethicone (a common silicone polymer) combined with a lauryl chain and polyethylene glycol (PEG) units. This hybrid structure allows it to work at the interface between water and oil, making it useful in skincare formulations.In skincare, it functions primarily as a surfactant and emulsifier, helping to blend water-soluble and oil-soluble ingredients together and to lift away impurities during cleansing. It is found in approximately 0.2% of skincare products, most commonly in cleansers and makeup removers.

As a surfactant, Lauryl PEG-8 Dimethicone reduces surface tension between water and oil phases. This allows it to surround and suspend oily residues (including makeup and sebum) so they can be rinsed away with water. The PEG component makes it water-soluble, whilst the silicone backbone gives it affinity for oils.In leave-on formulations, it can form a light conditioning film on the skin surface, contributing to a smooth, polished finish.

This ingredient is most commonly encountered in cleansing products rather than serums or moisturisers. Use as directed on the product label. In rinse-off formulations (cleansers), ensure thorough rinsing with water. If used in leave-on products, patch-test first if you have sensitive skin, as surfactants can occasionally cause irritation in susceptible individuals.

Lauryl PEG-8 Dimethicone is generally well-tolerated and considered safe for use in cosmetics at typical concentrations. As with any surfactant, it may cause irritation in those with very reactive or compromised skin barriers if used excessively or in high concentrations.
