What Is Lavandula Oil/Extract?

Lavandula oil is extracted from the flowers of the lavender plant (Lavandula angustifolia and related species). It is a volatile essential oil rich in compounds including linalool and linalyl acetate, which give lavender its characteristic scent. In skincare, it functions primarily as a fragrance ingredient.

Lavender extract may also be used in skincare products for its potential antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, though its primary role in most formulations remains olfactory. It is present in a small proportion of skincare products and is regulated as an EU allergen due to its volatile nature.

How It Works

The volatile compounds in lavender oil, particularly linalool, are responsible for both its aroma and its potential biological activity. When applied topically, these compounds may interact with skin tissue, though the extent of this interaction in diluted skincare formulations is modest.

Most of lavender's function in cosmetics is sensory rather than therapeutic. Any potential antimicrobial or antioxidant effects would result from the minor bioactive compounds present, rather than from lavender functioning as an active treatment agent.

Clinical Evidence & References

Research into lavender's skincare benefits is limited and mixed. Some in vitro studies suggest antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, but evidence from controlled human studies in skincare products is scarce. Many claims about lavender in skincare are based on traditional use rather than robust clinical data.

Given that lavender is typically used at low concentrations primarily for fragrance, it should not be relied upon as a primary active ingredient for skin concerns. If you are using a product containing lavender for its potential therapeutic effects, other active ingredients in the formulation are likely to be more significant.

How to Use

Lavender-containing products can be used as part of your regular skincare routine, following the instructions on your product packaging. If you are sensitive to fragrance or essential oils, check the full ingredient list. Lavender is present in only a small minority of skincare products, so you can easily avoid it if needed.

Safety & Precautions

Lavender oil is generally well-tolerated in skincare products at typical use levels. However, it is listed as an EU fragrance allergen and may trigger sensitivity in some individuals, particularly those with fragrance sensitivities or atopic skin. Patch testing is recommended if you have known sensitivities.
