What Is Luteolin?
Luteolin is a flavonoid—a type of plant compound found naturally in vegetables, herbs, flowers and spices. In skincare, it functions as a skin conditioning agent that works to protect and calm the skin.
Plants produce luteolin partly as a defence against UV radiation, absorbing some UVA and UVB light in the process. When applied topically, luteolin may offer similar protective benefits to the skin, alongside antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.
How It Works
Luteolin works through multiple mechanisms. It neutralises free radicals directly, acting as an antioxidant. It also influences cell signalling pathways that regulate inflammation, helping to suppress inflammatory mediators that trigger redness and sensitivity.
Additionally, luteolin has the capacity to absorb ultraviolet radiation, positioning it as a first line of defence against photodamage at the skin's surface. This multi-pathway approach makes it particularly useful in formulations designed to calm and protect stressed or sensitive skin.
Clinical Evidence & References
Research indicates that luteolin displays antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory and cell-based studies. Studies show it can suppress several inflammatory markers and modulate signalling pathways associated with skin inflammation and ageing.
The evidence base for luteolin in cosmetic skincare is emerging but still limited. Most data comes from in vitro and animal studies; further clinical trials in human subjects would strengthen the evidence for its efficacy in topical skincare formulations. Current evidence suggests potential benefit, particularly for inflammatory skin conditions, though results are not yet conclusive.
How to Use
Luteolin is typically incorporated into serums, essences, moisturisers and sun protection products. Since it works synergistically with other protective ingredients, it is often combined with vitamin E, vitamin C or other antioxidants. Use consistently as part of your daily routine for optimal benefit, and always pair with broad-spectrum SPF during the day for complete photoprotection.
