Mannan is a polysaccharide—a type of carbohydrate polymer—derived from plant sources such as yeast cell walls and certain seeds. In skincare formulations, it functions as a film-forming agent, meaning it creates a thin, breathable layer across the skin surface.
This film-forming property helps to temporarily smooth the skin's appearance and can support the skin's natural moisture barrier by reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). It is a naturally derived ingredient that integrates well into both lightweight and richer formulation types.
How It Works
Mannan works primarily through its film-forming capacity. When applied to the skin, the polysaccharide chains align on the surface, creating a thin, occlusive layer. This layer does not clog pores but rather sits atop the stratum corneum (the skin's outermost layer).
By forming this physical barrier, mannan reduces the rate at which water evaporates from the skin. This mechanism helps to lock in hydration and can provide a subtle plumping or smoothing effect.
